CURRENT
PROJECTS
The good news is, we have
developed the know-how to beautify Westchester!
We have established the political presence, and the relationships
necessary to move our work along. We have the designs and bids
in place to see yet another example of blight in our community
turned into something beautiful, and useful. And you and your
families can easily participate in making life in Westchester
as good as it can get!
Come to a WSIA meeting and discover what we are all about!
WEST MANCHESTER BOULEVARD
A number
of the original street trees planted over fifty to sixty
years ago in the sidewalks and medians of Manchester
Ave. have either died or have been removed due to safety
issues from their roots destroying the sidewalks.
WSIA has worked with the Street Services Division of
the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works to
develop a master plan for tree planting on the Avenue.
The City has an approved list of trees to be planted
that are not harmful to the environment and are suitable
for this coastal climate. A number of tree species that
fit those requirements were presented to WSIA Board
for evaluating the texture of the trunk, color and type
of foliage, if the tree has flowers and if it is deciduous.
After considerable discussion, the Board and stakeholders
selected decision the following species:
- For the median, Podocarpus trees.
- For the sidewalks a combination of an African Tulip
Tree (Spathodia campanulata) and a Gingko Buloba Maidenhair
Tree.
Many of the Podocarpus trees have been planted in the
medians. The master plan is to in time remove all the
old trees that are of a different species and replace
them with the Podocarpus trees.
Newly planted Trees
The master plan also calls for planting a pattern of
two Gingko Trees and one African Tulip Tree in the sidewalks
on both sides of the street with the African Tulip Trees
located at the four corners of each intersection. The
African tulip tree will add additional color to the
Avenue.
The Department of Parks and Recreation cooperated with
us by planting this tree pattern on their property along
the Westchester Golf Course.
In addition to the tree planting Master Plan, WSIA would
like to work with the residents whose property butts
up to the Avenue to paint their fences facing the Avenue
a color that will enhance the appearance of the color
of the foliage and flowers of the trees.
