FUTURE PROJECTS

In working with the City Council Office, the City Agencies and the community, the goal of the Westchester Streetscape Improvement Association is to visually enhance the major streets in the Westchester and Playa del Rey communities. This is one of the gateways to Los Angeles from the Los Angeles International Airport and it needs to be a present experience for people to pass though as well as providing an important improvement to the community.

The projects listed below are for the future.

North Welcome Sign
One of the future projects WSIA will be working on is a new Welcome to Westchester gateway sign at the north end of Westchester. It will be located at the intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard and Howard Hughes Parkway, and will be installed above the retaining wall on the west side of Sepulveda Boulevard. The basic design of the sign will be the same as the gateway sign at the south end of the Westchester Town Center.

WSIA will conduct a fund raising campaign for this project. The estimated cost is approximately $50,000. The letters of the sign will be illuminated, as are the ones in the other welcome sign. Please contact WSIA if you are interested in serving in this fundraising campaign.

LA TIJERA BOULEVARD
La Tijera Blvd is considered a secondary route to LAX. The portion of the Blvd. that WSIA is concerned with is Sepulveda Blvd. north to the 405 Freeway. Proceeding north beyond that point the street is aligned with apartments and the landscaping is well taken care of.

At the south end of the Blvd., WSIA was responsible for removing the old street trees and placing new trees that are approved by the City. Most of this portion of the street is commercial. Where sidewalks existed that did not have tree wells, the concrete was cut for new trees to be planted. This has brought continuity to the Blvd.

We are proud of our record of being responsible for planting over 460 new trees in the Westchester community.

AIRPORT BOULEVARD
Airport Boulevard is considered a secondary route to LAX. It runs through residential communities where the backyard fences abut the sidewalk. There is some retail on the boulevard as well. The number of street trees planted within the sidewalks is minimal.

WSIA's goal is to enhance the Boulevard by planting flowering street trees and selecting a paint color for the existing fences to make the street appearance more cohesive. Weed abatement is also an issue that needs to be addressed.

EAST MANCHESTER BOULEVARD
The streetscape on Manchester east of Sepulveda Blvd. has a different environment from the west of the Blvd. in that it has a mixture of residential property backing up to the Avenue plus a number of commercial properties.
However, the same tree planting master plan that was developed for the west side will prevail along this stretch of the Avenue. See Manchester Avenue (west of Sepulveda Blvd.) for the description of the tree planting master plan.
